Background information:

Sylvanus^6 Van Wicklin (Cornelius^5, Paul^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), was b. 1818, Ontario, Canada and d. 5 May 1896 in Brighton Township, Ontario, Canada at age 77 years. He m. Alice Tackaberry (b. 1824 and d. 1916) before 1843. Alice is listed in 1871 Ontario Census as of Irish origin and unable to write. He is buried along with his wife, Alice, and children Lorenzo, Martha, George, and Lorenzo's wife and children in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Brighton, Ontario, Canada. Sylvanus was a farmer and a blacksmith for the village of Brighton. In Belden Atlas of 1878, Sylvanus is listed with a 12.5 acre parcel of land in the village of Brighton. It appears that he was sectioning pieces of the land for building lots. Gates, like Sylvanus, resided in Brighton Township whereas the other siblings moved to Malahide, Elgin, Ontario (50 miles east). In 1910, Alice VanWicklin is living is Oswego, NY in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, John L. and Lucinda (VanWicklin) McDowell (see US Census data in sources below).

Mt. Hope, Brighton, Ontario) m. Dow Claus 9 February 1867; Robert^7 William Van Wicklin, b. 28 Aug 1844, Ontario; Lucinda^7 Van Wicklin, (b. 1847, d. 1927, bur. Mt. Hope, Brighton,Ontario). She m. John L. McDowell. It was his second marriage; Lorenzo^7 Van Wicklin, b. 1852, Ontario and d. 1907. Lorenzo m. Jennie Brooks (b. 1862 and d. 22 April 1942, Cramahe Twp). He was a fisherman.; Sarah^7 M. Van Wicklin, b. 1854, Ontario; Hannah^7 Rebecca Van Wicklin, b. 26 June 1857, Ontario. She died 17 March 1939. She married Horatio G. Saxton (b. 28 January 1838 and d. 21 July 1913) 18 March 1880 in Trenton, Ont., CAN. (Web-based information on the Saxton/Spafford family.) She is buried (Hannah Saxton) in Woods Cemetery, Cramahe Twp, Ont. Canada; Martha^7 A. Van Wicklin, b. 1859 and d. 1908; Ontario. Surrogate court record 8228 exists for Martha in the Archives of Ontario--located by Marg Trottman, 25 June 2002; George^7 A. Van Wicklin, b. 1862, Ontario and d. 11 May 1914. (See death registration in source section below); and Augusta^7 Van Wicklin, b. 15 Apr 1873, Ontario and d. 6 Jan 1944, Kern, CA. She married on 29 October 1895 in Brighton to George Allen Meredith, 24, of Brighton, b. Murray, s/o William and Ann (Evans) Meredith (see Marriage registration and census data in source section below.)

Note: On the same tombstone that lists Lucinda Van Wicklin McDowell (1847-1927) is the name Eliza, wife of N. Tackaberry (d. Oct. 30, 1885). This is Eliza J. Van Wicklin, first born of Sylvanus and Alice (Tackaberry) Van Wicklin. Also listed on this large marker are H.M. Tackaberry (1903-1974) and Samuel H. Tackaberry (1865-1941) and Maude Mallet (1870-1918) and daughter, Hilda. (visit to Mt. Hope, 27/28 July 2000)

Eliza, Rosa, and Lucinda are all buried in Section One, Row 14 of Mt Hope Cem, Brighton, Ontario, CAN. In Section two, Row Three are Lorenzo and his wife Jennie Brooks, Clarence D, Dorcie May, and Lewis R. and his wife Blanche Sturmey. Information on cemetery locations comes from fiche #6038217 examined by Jack Montgomery and reported to me in an email dated 10 November 2000.

I am not 100% sure that Cornelius and Anne Van Wicklin are Sylvanus' parents. I believe that Gates, Gilbert, Joseph, David, and Rebecca are Sylvanus' brothers and sisters. This is largely due to process of elimination in that we know the family lines of most other Van Wicklin's in the area--however, there is room for a surprise or two.

Additional note on Sylvanus VW (courtesy of Georgi Sills email 22 Nov 01) Sylvani Vanwicklin, age 27 --birthplace (Upper Canada) was imprisoned in the Colbourg Gaol in 1838 on the charge of treason. The Colbourg Gaol in the 1830s was quite unlike many of the country club institutions of present day. An interesting list is provided of the furnishings in: (1) the Debtor Apartment -- two tables, six bedsteads, six bedticks, two blankets, one rug, once cooking stove and pipes. (2) The Criminal's Apartment - One long table, two cooking stoves and pipes, nine rugs, sixteen blankets, seven bedticks, six bedsteads. In other parts of the building there was found: five common stoves, three tables, fifteen chairs and Judge's chair, chest belonging to Clerk of the Peace, five good padlocks, eighteen bad padlocks, two damaged knoblocks, three water pails, two washing tubs, four chamber pots, bread scales and five weights, one pair of leg irons, two pairs of hand cuffs, one iron collar, one pair of hand irons, two chains and staples, twelve candlesticks, two chairs, six hooks, six pair of snuffers, six ink stands, three copies of Statutes, Burns' Justice (4 Vol.), one Bible and Prayerbook, two testaments, two Companions for Pardoned. A February 1834 list of supplies received from Benjamin Throop included 21 lbs. of soap, 13 chamberpots, 15 drinking cups (tea), 8 padlocks, 2 washing tubs, 6 water pails, 6 4-pt blankets, 6 brooms, toweling, 2 ash boxes, 2 large water casks.

Additional note on treason charge (courtesy of Georgi Sills email dated 19 Dec 2001) I suspect that the charge [of treason for Syvanus VW] has everything to do with the rebellion of 1837-8...there were a number of men thrown in jail over this...whether charges were ever proved? ...who knows... suggest a look at local Cobourg or Toronto Newspapers, or even English language Montreal papers might get you more background on these matters. --Mike Stephenson (Genealogical researcher for Ontario, CAN; mstephenson@trent.ca)

Personal visit to Mt. Hope Cemetery, Brighton, Ontario. Repeat visit 27/28 July 2000 to Mt. Hope resulted in location of Rosa Van Wicklin's tombstone (near the Tackaberry section and simply a small stone laid flat and partially buried by sod which says, Rosa, wife of Dow Claus, 3 May 1878 at age 28 y, 11m., 14 da) This changes birth order of siblings and puts Rosa as the fourth born--at least for now.
